First Baptist Church is pleased to announce the winner of the Eighth Annual International Anthem Competition is Steven R. Seigart of Boston, MA.
Mr. Seigart is the second person who has graduated from University of Rochester/Eastman School of Music in 2008 as winner of this competition. Mr. Seigart won with the anthem“Rejoice in the Lord Always” for SATB choir, flute and organ which will be premiered on Music & Arts Sunday, May 4, 2014 at 10:00AM worship.
Judges for this year’s competition were Eleanor Daley of Toronto, Ont. Canada; Prof. Bruce Neswick of Indiana University, Bloomington, IN; and Robert J. Powell of Greenville, SC. Entries came from Russia, Germany and the US. All of the judges will be represented in worship on May 4 with published anthems performed.
About Steven Seigart
Steven is currently finishing Masters of Sacred Music degree at Boston University, where he specializes in choral conducting, studying with Dr. Ann Howard Jones. He has worked with such notable conductors as Harry Christophers, Andrew Parrot, Simon Carrington, Joshua Rifkin, Ken David Masur, Alexander Soloviev, Scott Jarrett, William Weinert, and Mark Scatterday. This past summer, he served as Assistant Conductor for the BU Tanglewood Institute Chorus, and will reprise his position for this coming summer. Steven is a member of the American Choral Directors Association.
As a composer and arranger, Steven’s works have been heard in the US and Europe. He has written works for chorus, organ, handbells, harp, piano, and voice, and is published both by the University of Rochester Press and his own company, Steven Seigart Publishing. Steven is an ASCAP licensed composer and publisher.
As an organist, Steven has held numerous positions in churches across the northeast, including St. Paul’s Cathedral (Syracuse, NY), Christ Church Episcopal (Rochester, NY), and currently serves as Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Parish (Westwood, MA), where he directs the choirs, plays organ for masses, and oversees the cantor program for the ~2000 family parish. Steven studied organ at the Eastman School of Music under professors David Higgs and William Porter, earning his Bachelor degree in 2008. He specializes in improvisation of various styles, and was invited to improvise on NPR’s Pipedreams Live! (aired on 10/19/09) during a series of live concerts at Eastman, and was selected as a semi-finalist in the 2012 National Competition in Organ Improvisation, becoming one of the youngest competitors ever to advance to the semi-finals.
As a music educator, Steven is currently on the staff of Boston University as a teacher in Aural Musicianship. During the summers at Tanglewood, he also teaches music theory and ear training to select groups of students. Steven also maintains a small, private studio of piano and voice students in the greater Boston area.
